Trails of Migration

Performed on 22nd March 2022 in Brighton

Lead Artist: Anna Des Clayes
Creative Assistant: Lorraine Yu
Producer: Joel Cottrell

In February 2022, Communitas Dance was commissioned by Sussex Dance Network to create an 'Alternative Tour' with members of the refugee and migrant community in Brighton. This project was part of the ABCD Cultural Recovery Programme, an initiative set up by Brighton cultural and artistic sector to enliven the arts scene following the pandemic.

Over seven weeks, bi-weekly creative workshops were held at the Brighton Unitarian Church with up to seventeen refugee and migrant women and children participants. Sessions combined movement and sketching tasks inspired by Brighton, as well as holding a sharing space for participants to teach traditional styles of dance from their respective countries. The movement material and artwork, culminated in a choreographic work, Trails of Migration, that was created in collaboration with the participants.

In May 2022, Communitas Dance was invited to talk about the creative process involved in the making of Trails of Migration at the academic conference 'What Dance Can Do? at the University of Chichester.
